Rhythmic Gymnastics world’s best athletes are set to meet in Athens for the FIG World Cup which is due to take place in the Faliro Olympic Indoor Hall (Tae Kwon Do) between 18-20 March.

Greece will entertain some of Rhythmic Gymnastics’ brightest stars in both individual and group competition, in what will be their first visit in the country which hosted the Games of the XXVIII Olympiad. The event marks the most important Gymnastics event held in Greece over the past 15 years and offers the host nation’s top gymnasts the chance to show their capacity against the world’s best.

Some 90 gymnasts representing 20 countries have already registered in a competition which is organised by the Hellenic Gymnastics Federation in collaboration with the Attica Region and the Municipality of Palaio Faliro, and will be held in accordance with the highest standards set by by the FIG.
Admission will be free for charge and in respect to the current applicable health protocols.

The FIG World Cup at Palaio Faliro, Athens would be the culmination of a fortnight dedicated to rhythmic gymnastics, since a week before (March 11-13) the same venue will host the 7th International Tournament Aphrodite Cup, organized by G.O.P.F. “Armonia” with the participation of 125 gymnasts coming from 17 countries and four different continents.

Hellenic Gymnastics Federation Vice President and Chairman of the Rhythmic Gymnastics Technical Committee of the Federation, Irini Aindili, commented:
The Hellenic Federation sees the FIG World Cup as a big challenge, which will place Greece in the epicentre of World Gymnastics. From the very first moment we took the event seriously and with a great sense of responsibility. FIG put faith in us by awarding us the event, hence we have been working hard ever since we were granted the right to stage the World Cup, so that the event will meet the highest expectations.
By organising the World Cup we add perspective and value to the Greek rhythmic gymnastics, upgrading the level of the sport in our country and setting highest standards. The Federation aims for the best possible outcome in terms of organisation and sport performance. At the same time the World Cup will offer the Greek team the opportunity to gain valuable experience competing against the world’s top gymnasts, while the youngest athletes will have the chance to meet their Rhythmic Gymnastics icons.
We pledge to provide our gymnasts with the best possible means so that they will earn the applause of the fans – which we expect to flock to the Arena – with their performance.
This event marks the beginning of the new Olympic cycle with the 2024 Olympics being the ultimate destination for most of the participating athletes.
As an Olympic medallist, I am perfectly aware of how important it is to give to our athletes such unique opportunities to compete at home at such high-calibre event and how deep the impact would be in regards of building their own sport profile. We are counting the days down and looking forward for the event to commence!”.

Besides their sporting value, Aphrodite Cup and the Rhythmic Gymnastics World Cup both have a special social and environmental status, showcasing a purely female sport held in close proximity to the International Women’s Day.

In addition, both events support the Palaio Faliro Girls’ Shelter “Agios Alexandros“, which has a 66-year-long history of providing shelter and childcare to abused and neglected or girls aged six to eighteen coming from families with multiple social and economic problems.

Aphrodite Cup is supported by the environmental organisation “Institute Team for the World – Environmental Alliance 2004+“, which promotes the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals and is part of the second tier of the Green Sports League certification system.

The Rhythmic Gymnastics World Cup will be held under the auspices of the Panhellenic  Association of Sports Journalists (PSAT).
